Loch Ness – a place of mystery and magic! Who knows what lurks beneath the dark, cold waters of this deep and sinuous loch? Many have searched for the creature, who was first reported by St. Columba in the 6th century. Ever since, people have reported sightings, glimpses, wishes, and hoaxes.
On the shore of the loch lies the ruins of Urquhart Castle. It may have been built on a prior Pictish fortress. Originally built in from the 13th to 16th centuries by the Macwilliams (descendents of Malcolm III). It was captured by Edward I of England in 1296, marking the beginning of the Wars of Scottish Independence. It was held by the Clan Grant in 1509. It holds a commanding spot overlooking the lake and is one of the largest in Scotland in area.
