Contest! Contest! Contest!

I am currently writing a novel based on the Irish tale of the Children of Lir.  It is an ancient tale, and my novels usually run between 70,000 words and 110,000 words.

Working title right now is The Enchanted Swans (thanks to Michele Erdvig at Ireland, Yes! for many wonderful suggestions!)

I would like to hold a contest in which you guess the total number of words in the first draft. The person who comes closest wins. The winner gets some variation of his or her name as a character in the novel. It won’t be a main character, as most of those names are already set by the tale. But you could be the weapons mistress, or the queen (oddly enough, she isn’t named in the tales). You could be the main character’s crush, or a bard who helps the children, or the head guard in the great hall. It will have to be modified so it sounds Irish, though. (i.e., Maria might become Maire, William might become Liam). Or I can modify your last name to sound like an Irish name (Johnson would become MacSean, son of John/Sean)

As a hint, I’ve planned out 83 scenes so far, and my scenes run, on average, about 1000 words each. Now, during the course of writing, I add, delete, combine, or extend scenes, but that’s where I’ve started. I’ve currently written 7 scenes so far, and I’m at 7,180 words.

Who wants in? Please reply on this post!  It may be a while until I’m finished with the first draft, but I’m hoping it will be before the end of February.

Celtic Fairies, Fables, and Folklore! Bestselling author (top #100 Amazon Canada, #1 in Paranormal Fantasy, Amazon Canada) Christy Nicholas, also known as Green Dragon, is an author, artist and accountant. After she failed to become an airline pilot, she quit her ceaseless pursuit of careers that begin with 'A', and decided to concentrate on her writing. Since she has Project Completion Disorder, she is one of the few authors with NO unfinished novels. Christy has her hands in many crafts, including digital art, beaded jewelry, writing, and photography. In real life, she's a CPA, but having grown up with art all around her (her mother, grandmother and great-grandmother are/were all artists), it sort of infected her, as it were. She wants to expose the incredible beauty in this world, hidden beneath the everyday grime of familiarity and habit, and share it with others. She uses characters out of time and places infused with magic and myth. Combine this love of beauty with a bit of financial sense and you get an art business. She does local art and craft shows, as well as sending her art to various science fiction conventions throughout the country and abroad. Update! I’m about half way through, but had to take a short hiatus while I moved to New York. Now I’m mostly settled in and on the wagon again! More news coming in a couple of weeks, hopefully!
