William Butler Yeats was an Irish poet who still lives in the hearts of millions. He was one reason Irish literature became a driving force of the 20th century, and was a Nobel prize winner in Literature.
The words above are an excerpt from The Cloths of Heaven, a small poem that is much quoted. I’ve heard of marriage ceremonies use it as vows, and declarations of love throughout the century.
Why is such a declaration needed? Are we so callous of our fellow man that we need caution them to be kind to us? It seems so.
There is a certain age in which each person realizes that their acts have consequences to others. This age may be different for each person. Some get it very early, even around age 10. Others don’t get it until they are well into middle age. Perhaps some people never realize this truth. For those people, I am sorry. Knowing that you can affect someone else – for good or for bad – is a basic ingredient to our own humanity. That which gives us kindness and compassion makes us human.
