I have never had a place I’ve truly called home.
Sure, I’ve lived in homes, and had family, but there is no town, no city, that I claim as my own.
I was born in Denmark, lived in Dearborn, MI until I was 8, Miami until I was 25, then Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, and Gainesville. Then we headed north to Morgantown, WV, and Nowhere Amish Country Southern Pennsylvania (yes, it’s a place, I swear!). Therefore, I was never so enamored of a place that I would call it my home. I’ve traveled to Ireland and my soul feels at home there, but I’ve never lived there. Yet!
And now the next adventure, Corning, NY.
It’s only barely farther south than when I lived in Dearborn, but in Dearborn I never had to drive in the ice or snow. I was a child, full of delight in the wonders of snowballs, snow forts and sledding, not an adult full of trepidation for black ice, frozen pipes and skidding tires.
Don’t get me wrong – I’m excited about the move and the new possibilities before me. And I’ve got a great new position at a fantastic company. But any change can be scary.
We become creatures of habit, even if we have gypsy souls like I do.
Perhaps one day I shall find a place that I claim as home. Until then, I follow the job and the wind!
