In this excerpt, Raymond stands between his new slave and the first communication Steene has received from the daughter he may never see again.
Raymond held up a letter in a plain white envelope. It was addressed to “Steene the cavvara shil coach, c/o Raymond Jeet” with the family’s address in careful handwriting below it.
Ellie’s handwriting.
Steene reached for the letter, his heart leaping, but Raymond pulled it out of reach. “Not so fast. Like I said, I don’t know if I actually want to let you have it.”
“It’s mine. It’s addressed to me. Give it to me!”
“Why should I?” Nothing had ever seemed as annoying to Steene as Raymond’s grin at that moment. “You’re my slave. Anything that’s supposedly yours technically belongs to me.”
Steene was tempted to make a grab for it. He could easily overpower the kid and seize his letter. But he knew what would happen to him then.
He took a deep breath. “Give me my letter.”
“You didn’t say please!”
“Fine. Please give me my letter.”
“I don’t know. How much is it worth to you?”
“You just said that everything I own is yours. I don’t have anything to give you.”
“Then do something for me. Something good. Otherwise I’ll open it and read it and then decide if I want you to have it.”
“How about this: I work for you six days a week without pay, in exchange for insults and injuries and illegal demands that I spend even my day off working for you, while you refuse to apply what I teach you and then blame me when you don’t do well.”
Raymond’s smirk dissolved into a glare. “You’re not doing a very good job of convincing me to give you what you want.”
